Maintaining vaginal health can be challenging, but there’s a simple, natural remedy that’s been trusted for years – boric acid. Let’s explore how boric acid can help balance your vaginal pH and combat common infections like bacterial vaginosis (BV) and thrush.
What is Boric Acid?
Boric acid is a mild acid that has been used for decades as a natural treatment for vaginal issues. It works by gently balancing the pH of the vagina, creating an environment where ‘good’ bacteria can thrive while discouraging the growth of harmful microorganisms. (BTW- IT IS NOT BORAX)
How Does It Work?
The slightly acidic nature of boric acid helps restore the vagina’s optimal pH level and support the growth of “good bacterias” such as lactobacillus species. It has both bacteriostatic and fungistatic properties, meaning it can inhibit the growth of bacteria and fungi without inhibiting the growth of the “good bacterias”. This action helps maintain a harmonious balance in your vaginal microbiome.
Benefits of Boric Acid:
- Treats both BV and thrush
- Helps balance vaginal pH
- Can be used preventatively
- Fast–acting relief from symptoms
- Alternative for those who haven’t found success with antibiotics, or do not want to use antibiotics.
How to Use Boric Acid Suppositories:
- With clean hands, insert one capsule (typically 600mg) into the vagina before bedtime
- Use daily until symptoms subside, or up to two weeks. Some boric acid providers reccomend approximately 3 days or until symptoms cease, others reccomend up to 2 weeks continuous use.
- Can be used every 12 hours if needed
- Some discharge is normal – consider wearing a liner

When to Use:
- When experiencing symptoms
- After sex to rebalance pH if required/are susceptible to BV/thrush
- After your period to rebalance pH if required/are susceptible to BV/thrush
- After taking antibiotics
- As a preventative measure
Safety Considerations:
- Boric acid suppositories are generally safe when used as directed
- Never take boric acid orally – it’s toxic if swallowed
- Not recommended during pregnancy– there is no evidence to know if it is safe to use during pregnancy
- If symptoms persist, consult your healthcare provider
Remember, vaginal health is an important but often overlooked aspect of overall wellbeing. Boric acid offers a simple, effective solution for many common vaginal issues. However, it’s always best to consult with a healthcare professional if you have persistent symptoms or concerns about your vaginal health.
