In our modern, tech-filled world, we are constantly surrounded by various forms of electromagnetic fields (EMFs). These invisible fields are generated by everything from power lines and electrical appliances to wireless devices and cellular networks. As a naturopathic practitioner, it’s important to understand EMFs and how they can be measured, as they have significant implications for health and wellness. It is important for you to understand too!
What are EMFs?
Electromagnetic fields are a combination of electric and magnetic fields that are produced whenever electricity is generated or used.
–Electric fields are created by the presence of charged particles
–Magnetic fields are produced by the flow of electrical current.
These fields can range greatly in frequency and intensity depending on the source.
Measuring EMFs
EMFs are measured using specialised instruments called EMF meters or gaussmeters. These tools allow us to quantify the strength of the electric and magnetic fields in a given environment. The most common units used are:
- Volts per Meter (V/m): This measures the strength of the electric field. Higher V/m values indicate a stronger electric field.
- Microteslas (μT) and Nanoteslas (nT): These units measure the strength of the magnetic field. Higher μT or nT values mean the magnetic field is more powerful.
- Watts and Hertz (Hz): Watts measure the power or intensity of electromagnetic radiation, while Hertz indicate the frequency or number of waves passing by per second. Higher wattage and frequency generally mean more powerful radiation.
By using EMF meters, we can assess the levels of exposure in homes, workplaces, and other environments. This data can help identify potential problem areas and inform strategies for mitigating EMF exposure. Building Biologists are trained professionals who can visit your home or workplace and assess it for EMF levels, mold, allergens, chemicals and water purity.
Implications for Health
While the health effects of EMFs are still being studied, there is growing evidence that prolonged or high-level exposure may contribute to various health concerns. (See my other blog post Navigating Electro-Magnetic Field Sensitivity: Understanding, Coping, and Thriving)
Some potential impacts include:
- Disruption of the body’s natural electromagnetic signaling
- Increased oxidative stress and inflammation
- Sleep disturbances and circadian rhythm disruption
- Potential links to cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, and other conditions
As a naturopath, I can provide guidance on exposure reduction, assess if heavy metal testing is required and facilitate the testing, and provide health guidance (nutrition, lifestyle, supplements, herbs) to support your health and wellbeing if you, or your family are wanting to reduce the effects of EMF of your health, or if you are suffering with EMF sensitivity.
If you have any questions or would like to learn more about EMFs, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me. My name is Ash, and I am a Perth naturopath with a special interest in supporting patients who are EMF sensitive. I’m here to help you navigate the complexities of the modern electromagnetic landscape!
